I am not a bandwagon motorcycle fan, not one who only sings praise of the style I currently own. If it has two wheels and an engine, I will probably have fun riding it. I’m 34 years old and I have been riding on and off for about 24 of them.

I was a passionate gear-head in my youth, always working on old cars, trying to make them go fast. I never had the financial means to build a car the way I wanted, but figured I would later in life. Well, I made it, I have the means, but I lost the interest. I just couldn’t imagine spending all the time, money, effort, and space required to build a nice project car. That’s when I started thinking about building a bike, an old bike, something easy to work on, something that doesn’t take up a lot of space, something that would still quench the my inner gear-head thirst, but wouldn’t break the bank  or my spirit to see it through.

I currently have a 2008 Yamaha R1 for the street, and a 2004 Yamaha YZ250F for the dirt. Don’t get me wrong, I love my R1, it’s great fun to ride, but it doesn’t exactly stand out in a crowd. I mean it looks cool, just as cool as all the other R1’s on the road that look just like it. I’d love to have something that was a little personalized. I considered building a Harley, but by the time I had built it out the way I’d like it, I would have spent enough to hate the bike, no matter how cool it turned out. At some point, I will inevitably tire of my creation. I don’t want to be responsible for delivering the deal of a lifetime from my losses,  to whomever ends up buying my creation.

I don’t believe I saw one specific cafe racer that instantly attracted me to the style, it was more of a slow evolution of emotion from appreciation to lustful desire. The style grew on me with every tastefully done example I found. After searching around for months, reading the build logs and experiences of others, I finally settled on a 1977 Honda CB550F.  This site will serve to record and share my experiences throughout the build.
